Being Smart With SEO

Jan Pascal asked:

Everybody involved in internet marketing knows what SEO or search engine optimization is. There are many tricks that can help improve website ranking. SEO is divided into on-page and off-page elements. Most webmasters do optimizations by themselves. Simply because this is pretty easy when you know what and how to do. On the other hand, many companies offer SEO services. Unfortunately, the quality of the service varies from top optimization approaches to waste of time and money. The reason lies in the fact that whatever SEO effort is worthless if you can not see or measure the effect of optimization. The only measurable elements are positions in search results. Even if you are not doing SEO for your website you should periodically check positions of your pages for each target keyword.

On-page SEO is basically very simple. However, if you are not creating own pages then you have little possibility to do SEO. Except creating right keyword frequency you can not create needed on-page elements. In such cases web designer or person responsible for web content management system should do basic on-page SEO. This means at least placing target keyword in the title and meta description, using header tags for titles and subtitles, and using keywords in anchor texts of internal links. All those elements are easy verifiable and this can be done by simply checking the source code of the page.

Off-page SEO means creating as many backlinks as possible. Three factors are important: PageRank of the link page, the “nofollow” attribute and the anchor text. The higher the PageRank of the page with link the more it is worth. Most blog and forum links are marked with the nofollow attribute. This attribute tells search engines (especially Google) not to follow the link and such links also do not contribute to the PageRank of the target page. Anchor text tells what the target page is about so it should contain right keywords. Off-page SEO is usually the main activity of SEO companies. It should also be your main optimization strategy.

But if you want to be smart with SEO you can use the most powerful tool that is usually neglected–your competition! The best way to learn tactics and tricks used by you competition is to analyze their websites. If they can do it you can do it. And you can do it better and more effectively. Use all their methods and apply some new approaches to increase ranking.

In principle, SEO is not a rocket science. It is more art than science. You only need basic knowledge, right tools and time.
