Internet Marketing For Small Business – Finding Your Target Market

Sue White asked:

Ideally this should be something that you plan to do long-term. It should be a topic that you enjoy so you can be personally engaged in learning about it and staying on top of the same subjects that your target market is interested in. If you have experiences or an interest in learning about the same topics your target market is interested in (i.e. you can relate to them) you can best understand their needs, values, concerns, problems…And you can connect to them in a genuine way, and offer solutions (value) to them.

Brainstorm and write down your possible target markets.

Who are they? Be as detailed as possible. What are their ages? (if applicable) Write down their concerns, worries, fears, problems, challenges, and painful circumstances. Write down reasons why they are concerned or have problems. Write down their dreams, aspirations, wishes, goals, wants, likes, needs. Write down a list of what is stopping them or holding them back from what they want List out subjects, controversies, books, people, authors or any topic of interest they might have

Write down concerns even if they appear to have nothing to do with your product. Do a Google search and read up on your target market.

Brainstorm and create a master list of “Attractive” Topics (There are three basic categories that your topics will fit under)

#1. Straight Forward Review. Examples

Top 10 things to look for when buying your first home How to know if an appraiser meets your state’s code of ethics What a home inspection can mean to you as a seller. Buyer. Who is the target market in each of these examples?

#2. Solving a Problem ‘They’ Have. Addressing a need…..

Why you should check out the homeowners association before buying Why you don’t have to wait to buy your dream home – if you know the secret How to make relocating a pleasurable experience How you can stay in touch with your family and friends and still move to a warmer climate How to avoid costly mistakes when buying your first home

Who is the target market in each of these examples? What problems are we addressing?

#3. Combine a straight forward review and address a problem

Why more real estate professionals recommend having your home staged before listing Steps to making relocation cost effective Top 5 reasons to buy your first home now and save money

Who is the target market in each of these examples? How do these topics fit into both categories?

Brainstorm a list of topics your target market would be attracted to. Consider which group the topic falls into (a straight forward review, solving a problem/addressing a need, or both.) Create a master list that you can add to over time, with items that fall into one of the three categories.
